Processes for Final Piece

For creating my final poster, I had to alter a lot of the images I added as their were things wrong or out of place with a few of them.
For example, in the below image, I took an image of a celery stick to use for my figure 4. I had to duplicate it, rotate it, and round the ends to make it look more realistic and to have my ending number. My main aim for all the numbers is for them to be clear and unambiguous, so it seems more professional and well thought-out.

Again, for the figure ten I had to make the bacon more realistic and have the definition there so that people knew what it represented. My original image of bacon was quite small and discoloured so I had to saturate it and rescale it to give it the right proportion compared to the egg. I also had an issue when creating the egg as my original image did not have a lot of white and so it did not look like a stereotypical egg like what I was aiming for. To remedy this I copied and pasted sections of the existing white to give it a more circular shape, then rounded it to give it the '0' shape I desired.

I edited every image that I used, even though they were my own photographs to begin with. Mostly I just replicated them, such as the grapes for number 7, the teabags for the 12, and the cherry tomatoes for half the nine. For the five, I used a similar method but instead of just creating the base number I thickened them out, and made two layers of the number five and placed them next to each other to give a thicker outline to make the number clearer. I'm generally pleased with the outcome of my poster so far, and I have found that my plan and drafts helped a lot when choosing which foods to use etc.
I didn't change much at all with my 'BANES' poster, as I just took the images and used them as they were, with the exception of the tree which is not my own image. Also I slightly altered the 'S' and the 'A' which I'll go into detail about later. The image displays my image before altering these two letters. I was pleased with both outcomes as they are also very accurate compared to my drafts.

2nd Meeting

In the second meeting with my representative, I wanted to find out what else to include on my advertisement, such as which logos, and which colours and fonts to use. I showed him both the final drafts of my clock idea, and my spelled out BANES idea, so that I could reflect on his feedback.

For our second meeting, we greeted Tim then went to the room we had booked for the meeting.

Harriet showed Tim her work, and explained the reasons behind it. The first idea was of the word 'B.A.N.E.S' written with different materials that the council recycle. Tim said that she was correct in placing the company's logo on all her advertisements as it is part of the criteria that we should be following, as well as using B.A.N.E.S' theme font of Arial. Tim explained that the company use the colour theme of blue for general recycling and green for food recycling and that she could perhaps incorporate this into the work, though said it wasn't necessary as the font and colours were not a strict guideline and most of their leaflets and posters have their own theme.

The next idea was a clock face made of food, with different items of food in place of the numbers. Tim advised her to replace the items of food with actual number-shapes. He also said that her idea of animating the clock was a good idea and could be good for a website.

Charlie showed Tim her posters, which featured images of vermin such as rats and maggots eating old food. This was intended to be a shock tactic to make people recycle their food so that this sort of situation didn't occur. Tim said this should perhaps be a leaflet instead of a poster, and that in general, his company didn't use negative advertisements. He also stated that as the situation is inevitable, it was overall a good idea, but would have to be in line with corporate guidelines. He said that all of our advertisements would have to include the company's tagline of “Make Bath and North East Somerset an even nicer place to live, work and visit”, their logo, and the layout of the rest of their media. He advised us to include the council e-mail address and contact number also.

Oliver showed Tim his work, which was a short animation of a banana walking off screen. Tim was really enthusiastic about the idea and said Oliver didn't need to add any prompts as it was self explanatory. He also decided that it would be suitable to display on the BANES website as the animation advertises the use of the food bins over regular bins to dispose of your food waste which is exactly what BANES wants the public to be informed about.

Final Draft

Doughnut Idea
I decided against animating my clock idea and keeping it as a poster. For my final draft of it, I collected pictures from the internet based on what I'd designed on my clock drafts, such as the doughnut base and food numbers, and edited them on the 'Photoshop' software. Below is my final draft of this particular idea, and my next step will be to make the same image (with modifications etc) using my own photographs and materials, as not to infringe copyright or plagiarism.

B.A.N.E.S Logo
I did the same thing for my second idea, which I'm also planning on re-doing using my own materials, if I did, the content and objects used would be subjective to change. I think when it actually came to creating the image, certain different materials and objects may work better. Also for this computerized image, I had to edit things such as the tie, to elongate it and make it into the right shape. Also the tree would not be possible to take a photograph of so I would either have to get permission for an image off the internet, or extensively edit an image of a tree.

Skip Idea
Lastly I also did it for my skip idea, although due to cost and time constrictions I will not be able to create it from my own materials and photographs, but I wanted to see how it would come out and it would also help me to reflect on the other ideas. Another problem that I feel arose with this draft is that all †he objects aren't in scale with each other which doesn't give the image a very professional appeal. I also don't think the information included with the image explained the advertisement very well. I also went against the BANES colour scheme as I used green for general recycling, because it ran with the same colour theme as the picture (grass etc).

Initial Drafts Expanded

I like this idea as it does not just advertise one area of recycling. The letters are what stands for the company name (Bath and North East Somerset), and what they are made of represents what that company can recycle. The letters content are explained in the picture, just to make sure the message gets across to the public. The point of this advertisement is to make the public aware of things that can be recycled that they may not have realised before, such as garden waste and electronics. This will hopefully increase the levels of recycling in the area.

The reason I chose this idea over my others is that my similar advertisement spelling out 'RECYCLE' in food seems to basic, and I have many ideas that only advertise food recycling, whereas this is the idea that covers the entire range of things that can be recycled. My other advertisement, featuring a skip, would have been a lot harder to create compared to the other ideas. This is because of my time and costs restraints, and when it came to creating the poster from my own materials, hiring a skip and all the contents would have been almost impossible with the amount of time and money I had to do the project. I think overall this is the best idea to look deeper into, as it is very effective, simple to understand and could be featured on a website, as a logo, or as a poster for the company.

Initial Drafts Expanded

The main difference between this and idea 3 is that the numbers are food shaped to represent them rather than just symbolising them. This is my favourite idea for my campaign so far. I will use it as a poster, or as an animation, and will have to consider what else to include on it. If I used it as an animation, the hands would move to prevent confusion about what the time featured on the clock actually represented, and if I chose this idea then it could be featured on the B.A.N.E.S website. My recycling representative explained that their existing campaigns used the colour scheme blue for general recycling and green for food recycling. I decided I am going to stick to this, so that my poster has some form of continuity with the rest of their advertisement and does not seem random and unprofessional. I will include the taglines 'Love Food Hate Waste' as this is a broad campaign that BANES support, and 'Time To Recycle Food' which is my own addition. I do not what the advertisement to appear too cluttered, so I am trying to keep it basic so that the meaning is not lost.
I have decided to keep this idea as one of my finals as I feel it is the most professional and the easiest to understand. I feel the clock idea as a pizza is overcrowded and may confuse the public, and the strawberry idea may be over simplified, causing the same issues. I feel this idea is better than the original, as if I had just left it as the numbers being symbolised by food it seems too informal, whereas this idea has the right balance of formality and seems professional and well executed.

Planning My Advertisement

After I had got past the initial drafts, I started to think about the additional things that would be on my advertisement, such as fonts and colour schemes. I started looking up different fonts that I thought would be appropriate for my poster, and wrote why I thought they would tie in with my advertisement and which wouldn't. I think this was important as it helps to have planned ahead rather than just choosing the first thing that seems suitable. I didn't have much choice with the colour scheme as Tim gave me guidelines of green for food waste, and blue for general recycling. There was some confusion over which fonts I was and wasn't allowed to use. At our second meeting, Tim stated that the guidelines covering this issue were vague and that there were no strict rules about any fonts, which is why I began looking into different fonts. He then e-mailed me to say that the company's font was Arial, so I e-mailed back to stop any confusion to ask which font I definitely should be using, to which he replied Arial.
I also thought about the logos I would include, such as the Love Food Hate Waste campaign as explained earlier, the Bath And North East Somerset council logo, and probably the councils contact details (number/e-mail address). I also knew that I had to include the B.A.N.E.S 'tick' at the bottom of the page, almost a banner, to include information and other related things. This followed the theme of every other council advertisement so it tied me to that company, as well as the B.A.N.E.S tagline, 'Making Bath and North East Somerset an even better place to live, work and visit. However these were the only guidelines he gave me so the rest was down to me.

Initial Drafts

From the first meeting with Tim, I started to sketch some rough drafts, as shown. I couldn't decide on exactly what to do, so I did around five different ideas so I could see which ones I should focus on. The main point of my advertisement would be to make recycling more appealing, especially to the younger generations. (Click images to enlarge)

Idea 1
This idea is running with my 'Time To Recycle Food' idea theme. The strawberry seeds represent/create the numbers on the strawberry clock face to tie in with the 'time' aspect, and the strawberry base represents the new food recycling scheme. With the tagline 'Time To Recycle Food', I think the concept is self-explanatory. My only concern is the placement of the clock hands, as the audience may think that the time the clock shows is important or relevant to something, so I may edit it so that the hands give the appearance of moving quickly so they don't settle on any particular time.

Idea 2
This second idea has the same principles as the strawberry idea, with different placement of the numbers and an alternative clock face, with a pizza instead of a strawberry. My concern with this idea is that the numbers would not be clearly visible because of the amount of detail on the pizza. Also I think the audience may not understand the meaning as the clock hands are not as easily understood (the lines between the pizza slices represent them).

Idea 3
I think this third idea is my most promising for my final piece, as I think the meaning is conveyed easier than the first two ideas. This idea includes a doughnut for the clock face, and the entire thing is made from food. E.G the centre of the clock is a cherry, and the hands are made from bread sticks. I don't have any main qualms with this idea, although I may alter it so food does not just symbolise the numbers but are shaped like them too.

Idea 4
This idea does not advertise any specific advertising, but instead is intended to be a shock tactic. It features a skip of a large size (made apparent by the small size of surroundings , trees, people etc) in a rural setting, to show the contrast between the natural countryside and all the man-made junk. The skip is filled with objects that BANES are able to recycle , but are majoritively just put into a landfill. There would be information on this poster that reflects this, such as the statistics of how much is thrown away that could otherwise be recycled by BANES.

Idea 5

This idea differs from previous ideas as although it still advertises the new food recycling system from BANES, I have changed the initial concept. The word 'RECYCLE' is spelled out using different types of food to display the subject.

Idea 6
This idea is similar to the above, although this idea doesn't just advertise food, but recycling as a whole. I think food waste would be the best direction for my final piece, because as it is so new, the majority of the public need to be made aware of it.

First Meeting

Following are the minutes from my groups first meeting with the B.A.N.E.S representative. The meeting consisted of us being introduced, explaining the brief, and telling him our basic ideas.

Held on Wednesday 23rd June at 2.00pm

Tim Rawlings greeted us and introduced himself. We then asked Tim if he had set any particular brief for us, to which he replied that we may choose any form of media outlet, as long as it advertised the BANES company in some way.
Oliver decided to advertise the company via a film or an advert. He would use stopmotion animation and follow the life of a container/item as it goes from the store, to a home, then to a recycling centre, then showing how it can be reused, to explain sustainability to people who are unaware. Tim thought this was a good idea and offered to show Oliver around the recycling centre to aid his project.

Harriet was going to raise awareness for BANES through advertising. She would use the format of a poster to advertise either the things BANES can recycle, or the amount that can be recycled but isn't. Both ideas would incorporate the new food waste system that not many people are aware of. For this reason Tim thought it would help the company and alert the public of the things BANES can do.
Tim said we should improve on these ideas and develop them further, then make another date for the next meeting so he could see our progress.

Emails

After deciding to work with B.A.N.E.S from the research completed, I then contacted the person I would be working with arranging a meeting and explaining what we would be doing. I contacted him on behalf of my group. This information is a complete file of all the emails sent and received, from the beginning to the end of the project, which are dated.

Hi Harriet,

Thanks for showing me your ideas yesterday, my boss Lorinda is very keen to see how the designs are going, could you forward them over. She may well have some ideas and is keen to use them if appropriate.

I have attached the recycle swoosh and attached a few facts about food waste.

If you have any questions or need anything else please do not hesitate to ask.

All the best
Tim
01/10/10

--------------------------
Hi Tim,
Just wondering if you have had any feedback from your boss yet? I'm very keen to hear if she'd like to use them, as I'd like to be recognised for my work as it is what I plan on doing as a career.
Also, is the Arial font you suggested a strict guideline or are we allowed to use similar fonts? Thanks, Harriet.
14/10/10

--------------------------
Also, I was unsure on where B.A.N.E.S stood with the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign? Do you support them, and should I include it in my advertisement? Thanks, Harriet.
14/10/10

--------------------------
Hi Harriet,

Yep we support love food hate waste and we have run several campaigns in the past, there is plenty of reference to it on our website so it would be good to include it especially with our new collections. Our corporate design guidelines are pretty clear that all printed text shoud be in Arial. Everything the council produces is in Arial (it stems from consumer research where it was found that fewer people had issues in reading arial compared to the other texts e.g if you have poor sight for instance the curls on a times font can confuse etc equally we cannot underline stuff because some people have trouble reading it etc).

My boss is out today so I will chase her for some feedback asap.

Thanks

Tim
14/10/10

--------------------------
Hi Tim, is it okay if we arrange our last meeting? The deadline for the project is next week so we'll be showing you our completed work.
Could you come in next week? It doesn't really matter when, but we aren't in Monday and we'd appreciate it if we could have the Tuesday to finish up.
Thanks, Harriet, Charlie and Oliver.

Also, do you have any feedback from your boss yet?
28/10/10

--------------------------

Hi Harri,

My boss has recently married and hasn't provided me with any feedback yet, I will chase this on Tuesday when she is back. I am happy to meet, shall we say Wednesday if you need the Tues to finish up? Let me know what time, prefereably between 11-1?

31/10/10

--------------------------

Hi Tim, yeah that would be fine, 12 midday. Thanks, Harriet.

Scartworks

Scartworks is a company that creates individual pieces for clients throughout the UK, ranging from large steel sculptures, to mosaics and ceramics. They specialise in artwork for public spaces and are hired by private corporations, local authorities and community groups.

They have also worked for some big-name companies such as Morrisons, The National Trust, and London City Hall. They are linked to my project as they also have to interact with their partners, to find out what their brief is and what limitations they may have. They say their approach is site-specific, as to create the work they do they have to respond to the space that is available and the surrounding landscape and environment. The company do this so they can base their work on the surroundings so it doesn't look out of place.

Works they have completed include a stainless steel photographic screen on the side of Blackburn Railway Station, street mosaics, and a sculpture inside a shopping centre. They have also completed commissioned art such as images of London on panels to go inside the London City Hall. For the photographic screen, their website describes how the company had to work closely with the consultant engineers of the project, and the main site contractors. They also had to do their research for the actual content as the images are of people well known for being connected with Blackburn, and who reflect the industrial past of the town.

For the shopping centre sculpture, the company interviewed over 100 people in and around the area asking their opinion on what needed to be done. The people decided they wanted something modern and contemporary, and that would show the identity of the town. From this, the designer decided to use the idea of DNA, which is what the model was designed around. The DNA sculpture was then placed in the central atrium and can be seen from all three floors. I think this is very relevant to my project as they interviewed and interacted with a lot of people involved and who would be affected by the work.

I have learned from this research to consider the surroundings of the placement of future work to make it tie in. Also to ask people involved what their opinions are, and to consider who would be directly affected.
